How to Choose a Wire Prefeeder and Pay-Off System

Choose a wire prefeeder or pay-off system by reel mass, line speed, acceleration, allowable tension, accumulation, dereeling control and downstream interface.

A prefeeder does not make a processing machine faster by itself. It removes uncontrolled reel inertia and supply tension so the downstream cutter, stripper or coax processor can feed material under repeatable conditions. Match spool mass, payout direction, buffer travel and demand changes to the line, then measure downstream length and feed stability through a full reel.

Do not size a dereeler from reel weight alone. A large barrel with a balanced winding can behave differently from a smaller, tightly wound reel with high start inertia.

Match architecture to material and reel size

The WM-9105C tension-free coaxial cable prefeeder is designed for sensitive Ø0.6–5 mm coaxial cable within its published range. The WM-9334 powered 250 kg spool dereeler addresses heavy reels, while the WM-9150 variable-speed pay-off machine publishes a 50 kg reel capacity and up to 4 m/s line speed.

For incoming coils requiring powered pay-off, consider the WM-9155 coil unwinder. It supplies material to the downstream machine rather than making finished coils; confirm mounting, load capacity and start-stop response against the actual coil and machine cycle.

Confirm:

  • how the system detects demand and prevents reel overrun;
  • minimum bend radius through every guide and accumulator;
  • safe threading, reel loading and rotating-part guarding;
  • behavior after emergency stop and when material runs out;
  • alarm or interlock exchange with the downstream machine;
  • whether the cable can twist while leaving the reel.

Test dynamic operation

Validate repeated start-stop cycles at the shortest production length, not just continuous running. Check cable tension and finished-length stability at low and high reel fill. Repeat after a controlled stop, emergency stop and reel change.

Supply control is especially important in coaxial cable assembly and high-cross-section EV wire harness production. Review real projects in the case library, or send the reel drawing, cable sample and downstream cycle profile for an integration recommendation.

Questions engineers ask

When does a cutting machine need a separate prefeeder?

Add controlled feeding when reel inertia, drag or acceleration creates tension that the downstream machine cannot isolate. Warning signs include length drift, insulation stretch, feed alarms and unstable high-speed starts.

What reel information is required?

Provide maximum full reel mass, flange diameter, barrel diameter, width, arbor or shaft interface, winding direction and whether reels are supplied with damaged or uneven flanges.

Should the prefeeder speed equal the downstream rated speed?

Steady speed alone is insufficient. Size the system for peak take-up rate, acceleration, stop-start duty and a safe control margin while maintaining the allowable material tension.
